Sound tuning

Hi-fi systems with a good sound quality and reasonably affordable prices often benefit extensively from well-aimed tuning.

A well balanced and carefully and purposefully tuned hi-fi system very much conveys the emotionality of the musical reproduction by minimizing or even eliminating interference in combination with improved sound precision and thus greatly contributes to the musical experience.

NEWTON sound tuning is based on a sound understanding of basic physics as well as the sound-shaping parameters in hi-fi systems.

Turntable mats

The turntable mat is an important hi-fi component that significantly influences sound quality. Thus particular attention should be paid to the selection in order to make the perfect choice.

Pliant or soft turntable mats dampen vibrations, but they also slightly soften the impulse precision. With hard or rigid mats, apart from the material used, the evenness of the contact area is of particular importance. Furthermore the discharge capacity for static charges is an important decision-making factor.

Turntable mat no. 1 -flat-
  • delivers enhanced impulse precision and tonal depth & scale
  • consists of particularly smooth graphite
  • unmitigatedly level, polished surface
  • reduces sonic interference caused by record vibrations
  • excellent discharge capacity
  • height: 3mm
  • diameter: 295 mm
  • flat design
Turntable mat no. 2 -conical-

delivers enhanced impulse precision and tonal depth & scale

  • consists of particularly smooth graphite
  • unmitigatedly level, polished surface
  • prevents sonic interference caused by record vibrations
  • enhanced planar contact area, even with slightly undulating records
  • excellent discharge capacity
  • height: 4.5mm
  • diameter: 295 mm
  • conical design (an adjustment of the azimuth is possible, however, the inclination angle is chosen so that an adjustment of the azimuth is not required)

Tip: A record weight of at least 500g is crucial. We strongly advise the use of record weight no. 1.

Turntable weights

The purpose of a turntable weight is to press the record onto the platter, thus reducing resonance.

To perform this task, two requirements have to be met. First of all, the turntable weight should – as its name suggests – be heavy, so that it effectively presses the record onto the platter. Second, the turntable mat should be designed to ensure that the record, by being weighed down, is pressed onto the platter in a totally level way, so that vibration is eliminated or at least drastically reduced.

Therefore, NEWTON strongly recommends the following turntable weights in conjunction with turntable mat no. 2 (concave).

Turntable weight no. 1 (heavy)
  • material: stainless steel
  • specifically recommended for use in combination with turntable mat no. 2 (concave)
  • weight: 1100g
Turntable weight no. 2 (ultra heavy)
  • material: stainless steel
  • specifically recommended for the use in combination with turntable mat no. 2 (concave)
  • weight: 1500g

Bearing accessories

With a heavy platter, the use of a bearing ball that is as hard as possible considerably improves the running characteristics of the platter bearing. Use of a bearing ball made of ceramic reduces friction and enhances durability.

Bearing balls made of steel often get flattened by the high point load in the contact area with the platter spindle (this is easily discernible under high magnification). The contact area thus gets bigger, resulting in increased friction. Because of the high point load, the bearing oils get pushed out and the contact area runs dry, resulting in significantly higher abrasion and the decline of running properties due to increased friction. Ceramic or mineral bearing balls have a significantly higher load capacity and excellent running properties.

Ceramic bearing ball no. 1
  • high load capacity, ceramic
  • diameter: either 5 mm or 6 mm
Mineral bearing ball no. 2
  • highest load capacity, ruby
  • diameter: either 5 mm or 6 mm

Other tuning components

NEWTON offers additional tried and tested tuning components. Far too little attention is paid to the regular cleaning of records. You will be surprised at the immense sound potential revealed by a carefully cleaned record.

This additive allows for the use of the L’ART du SON- record cleaner in cleaning devices from the German company Audiodesksysteme Gläss GmbH.
